Makedonski Telekom fully modernized and upgraded its network in 2022, whereby now it is ready for the next generation of technologies. Such major changes occur in the sphere of telecommunication once in 10 years and they bring about a transformation of the technology itself and of the services for the customers, as well as a superior customer experience.

Network modernization

With the completion of this project, which was implemented with investments expressed in millions and fully dedicated field work, the foundation was established, i.e. the most modern network, on which the new digital world is going to be built. In just 18 months 900 new base stations were installed on which NBIoT for M2M communication is available. The capacity of the new modernized network has increased by staggering 70%, while the average speeds for the customers by 50%.

The first and largest 5G network

After several years of testing and preparations, in February of this year, the company launched the first commercial 5G network in Macedonia and it enabled the use of 5G services with an advanced technology for a dynamic use of the existing radio frequencies. In July, it obtained the 5G radio frequencies, thereby also obtaining the capability of providing gigabit speeds for the customers. The network has been growing and developing and in just 18 months the customers living in 26 towns and their surrounding areas were enabled to use the next generation services. Gigabit speeds and low latency have become our reality and already 12% of the entire traffic is generated on 5G.

Future application of the new technologies

This technology will be the driving force for the development of new features in multiple areas that will make our life simpler and better in all spheres. For example, Massive IoT is going to enable a substantial development in the segment of smart cities and smart infrastructure. 5G will enable the application of artificial intelligence for improving the efficiency of the network itself. Artificial intelligence will enable detecting even the tiniest inconsistencies in the functioning of the networks and the systems that deliver key services. Thus, it will be possible to prevent them without the customers even noticing it. All of the foregoing is going to ensure a superior network and service delivery, unprecedented services and products, as well as wide access for everyone to the new technologies.
