According to UN, as many as 68% of the population is projected to live in large cities by 2050. Increase of the world population (80 million per year), air pollution, uneconomic waste of resources are only part of the problems we face in the modern living.

Technology can be a key factor in overcoming economic and environmental challenges, and we should use innovative solutions for a smart city as the biggest advantage in the fight for a healthy environment, solving city problems and promoting urban living.

The concept of smart cities through advanced digital technologies will optimize city resources, reduce operating costs for electricity and maintenance, provide better services to citizens and a safer and better life. Makedonski Telekom, in cooperation with the municipalities, made the first major step towards smart cities with the implementation of a project for smart street lighting. Makedonska Kamenica, Cheshinovo – Obleshevo and Vasilevo are the first municipalities in the country with smart city lighting. This solution will bring better lighting of streets and public places by 60%, reduction of electricity bills of the municipalities by 85% and most importantly: reduction of harmful emissions of carbon dioxide into the air.

If all municipalities introduce smart street lighting and we continue with a more comprehensive implementation of smart city solutions, a real change will be made in economic and environmental terms. Through the smart city solutions, the technology is used as a tool for a better life.
