39 innovative ideas from Macedonia

Makedonski Telekom and T-Mobile selected the innovative project that will be the Macedonian representative at the finals of the Deutsche Telekom Innovation Contest 2014 in Krakow, Poland. This year, 39 countries applied for the contest with 326 ideas. After the selection in the semi-finals, twelve finalists will compete in Krakow on 27 June.

Macedonia was one of the countries that had the highest number of submitted ideas, with 39 innovation teams, companies or individuals that applied for the contest, which puts us in the second place in the world, after Germany.

On 14 May, the expert jury from Makedonski Telekom and T-Mobile and hub:raum Krakow, after the presentation of the ideas of the ten finalists, selected the winning project. The winners are the students Dimitar Minovski and Kristijan Gjorgjeski with their idea for solar irrigation pump, intended for agriculture and managed via the internet, which also includes a weather forecast feature.

“We are especially glad that our project won in such strong competition of innovation projects, which also included scientific works of professors at our university. The idea which we have, the new method of irrigation is a system which uses the natural resources for its operation, and by combining the air temperature, humidity and the weather conditions is smart enough to assess when and to which extent to irrigate the fields with agricultural crops, and additionally to present all of that to the farmer on the graphic interface on his computer.

We are happy that we will have an opportunity to attend the Krakov programme which offers trainings for beginners in the business world, so in addition to competing for the main prize, we will accumulate knowledge about the way in which a successful startup company works, so why shouldn’t our project become such a successful story.“ – said Dimitiar Minovski.

In parallel with the finals in Macedonia, the national preliminary contests were also carried out in Athens, Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest, Podgorica, Prague, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Zagreb and Berlin.

All finalists, including the finalists from Macedonia, will have an opportunity to attend a 4-day startup training program where they can learn from experts, gain insights into Deutsche Telekom's research projects, and have the opportunity to further develop their idea. The winning team from Krakow will take the stage at the "Long Night of Startups" on September 6 in Berlin, at which up to 6,000 guests are expected.

The winners will continue to develop their ideas in cooperation with the national companies of Deutsche Telekom. The prizes include investments of up to EUR 150,000, inclusion in international startup programs, hardware, software and contacts with top executives in Deutsche Telekom.

The 2014 contest is supported by hub:raum, a Telekom program with locations in Berlin, Krakow and Tel Aviv, as well as by Kitchen Budapest and UQBATE, a special program for Group employees. Additional sponsors include seven national Telekom companies in Central and Eastern Europe. They will coordinate the national preliminary rounds, provide prizes and in future they will cooperate with the finalists and the winners.

In 2013, over 700 teams from 45 countries submitted 444 ideas. Out of 12 finalists from eight countries, Excalibur from Slovakia was the winner with an authentication solution for mobile devices. Cubilog from Hungary and Germany's Codeatelier took the second and the third place, respectively, with their "Homee" solution.
