Makedonski Telekom launched the first commercial 5G network in Macedonia, thus enabling the use of 5G services in parallel and in combination with 4G, as a result of the advanced technology for dynamic use of existing radio frequencies.

Preparations for the introduction of 5G technology began in 2018 with the first laboratory demonstration of 5G, and in 2019 Telecom set up the first real test network through which data transfer speeds of 1Gbps, ten times higher than 4G, were achieved.

Makedonski Telekom is in the process of implementation of the new 5G radio access network and in half a year it has managed to provide 5G signal coverage to 15 cities and their surrounding areas:Stip, Veles, Kavadarci, Negotino, Sveti Nikole, Bitola, Prilep, Krushevo, Ohrid, Struga, Resen, Strumica, Radovish, Gevgelija and Dojran.

The implementation of 5G in Skopje and the surrounding area started this month, and by May, all customers from the capital and the wider Skopje region will have access to 5G services. By the end of October 2022, 26 cities in Macedonia will be covered with the latest generation equipment.

The Telecom network is ready to provide super-fast gigabit mobile internet, immediately after the completion of the process for allocation of radio frequencies for the 700MHz and 3.6GHz frequency bands by AEK.

“Three years ago, we started the first preparations for the technology of the fifth generation, and today we have the first commercial 5G network. In the past years we have been preparing, investing, testing, building and talking about the future, so now we can say that 5G is here. We have met one of the most important prerequisites for the fourth industrial revolution, and with the new 5G radio frequencies, this technology will reach its true potential, while our customers will get the speeds we are aiming for.“ – said Nikola Ljushev, Chief Executive Officer of Makedonski Telekom.

5G for the customers

For now, 5G will be available to customers in the cities covered by 5G, in accordance with the tariffs they use, provided they have one of the following adequately certified 5G devices: Samsung S21, Xiaomi 11 Lite NE and Motorola Edge 20 Lite. The 5G certification process with Apple is expected to be completed during the second quarter of the year.

The possibilities of the 5G technology will be available in the following tariffs: Ultra - included in the monthly fee, without the need for activation, Magenta 1 Unlimited and Mobile Unlimited without additional fee, with activation of the service via the TelekomMK application. In the promotional period, the customers of Magenta 1 M and Mobile M will also be able to activate the 5G without additional fee via the TelekomMK application. The access to the 5G network will be also provided without additional fee to the business users, in the tariffs Magenta1 Business L / Business L and Business XL / XXL with automatic activation, and for the customers of Magenta1 Business M and Business M with activation via the application TelekomMK. The list of smartphones certified for 5G will be constantly growing and will be supplemented with new models.

High speeds and capacities of the new 5G network will revolutionize the user experience, content sharing at the speed of lightning and low latency in communication. This technology will be the driving force for the development of new functionalities and unparalleled services and products that will simplify and improve our lives in all spheres.

The use of all the advanced functionalities of this network will take place gradually over the coming years, along with the growth of the possibilities of the new technologies.
