A little bit later than what we are usually accustomed to, this year’s jubilee edition of the Ohrid Summer Festival started last night. In the spirit of celebration of the musical heritage and tradition, the first festival evening was dedicated to the very beginnings, i.e., to the premiere edition and the performance by the opera prima donna Ana Lipsa Tofovic, who started the magic of the Ohrid Summer Festival in 1961.

The opening was marked by the performances of the opera stars Marija Jelic, Amanda Stojovic, Dario Di Vietri and Ivan Tomasev, accompanied by the piano performance by Milivoje Veljic. The evening ended with their performance of the Ode to Joy - the Anthem of Europe, by Ludwig van Beethoven, in honour of this musical genius on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his birth.

As always, the Festival has an impressive programme and this year it is dedicated to honouring the life and work of Beethoven within the grand opening, while sending the message that music is a universal language that connects people.

In Beethoven's honour, organized by Deutsche Telekom, his magenta statue travelled throughout Europe, from Bonn, his place of birth, through Skopje and all the way to Vienna where he actually created Symphony No. 9. The Beethoven statue will also be symbolically displayed in Ohrid, while his music will enhance the programme of the Ohrid Summer Festival, which has been held for many years with the support of Makedonski Telekom.

Due to the unforeseeable circumstances that have stricken the world over the past several months, this year the Festival started on 4th August, and it will be slightly shorter than usually lasting until the last day of the month.

Under special arrangements and by duly adhering to the precautionary measures, this year’s edition of the Ohrid Summer Festival will be a little different, but we are convinced that it will still create moments and memories that will enrich its tradition and continue to be reminisced for years to come.
