National award for the “The first 5 are the most important” implemented by the Foundation and UNICEF

The Project “The first 5 are the most important", which is the product of the partnership between the T-Mobile for Macedonia Foundation and UNICEF, won a plaque for corporate social responsibility from the National Coordinative Body for Corporate Social Responsibility of the Companies and the Ministry of Economy.

The purpose of the campaign, which was launched in 2013, is the promotion of the importance of early childhood development and mobilization of support for opening new centres for early childhood development. The early childhood development centres are an alternative for kindergartens in the rural and marginalized areas; such centres are being constructed where it is not economically justifiable to construct kindergartens. Thus, the children coming from such vulnerable environments are provided with an equal opportunity for an early education, which is going to help them be better in school and in life in general.

So far, with the donation of the T-Mobile for Macedonia Foundation in the amount of 50,000 USD, five early childhood development centres have been opened, while at least three more are expected to be opened in the course of the year. Additionally, a campaign is underway for involving all municipalities, individuals and business entities in the action, so as to enable the opening of as many as possible centres.

This national campaign was initiated by the Foundation and UNICEF and it has been implemented with the help of numerous agencies, media and individuals that provided free-of-charge services, as well as with the support of the local self-government. Furthermore, the campaign is a response to the necessity of an increased access to services for early childhood development. Such services are provided only by the kindergartens which are financed by the state and a small number of centres for early childhood development which were opened with the help of UNICEF. Despite the fact that the access to such services has been doubled since 2005, only 1 in 5 children (22%) aged 3 to 5 go to the kindergarten or to an early childhood development centre.

The campaign will continue also in 2014/2015.

The national award for best corporate social responsibility practices of the companies is being presented for the seventh year in a row, starting in 2008, for the purposes of promoting positive practices of corporate social responsibility, while at the same time inspiring a further enhancement of the corporate social responsibility of the companies in Macedonia.
