Makedonski Telekom has implemented the project that will ensure 80% savings and protection of the environment

Another municipality in Macedonia has started its transformation into a smart city by installing smart street lighting. In Kriva Palanka a system has been installed with over 2000 light bulbs which turn on and off when necessary and the whole process is backed up by the smart city platform to which new applications and contents can be added. The goal is to ensure improved lighting in the streets and public spaces by 60%, reduce the electricity bills of the municipality by as much as 80% and significantly reduce the harmful carbon dioxide emissions in the air.

By means of this activity, Kriva Palanka is commencing its transformation into a modern and sustainable municipality in which priority is given to the citizens’ quality of life.

"Thus far, we have been paying approximately MKD 800,000 a month for the public lighting, while with the new energy-efficient installation, the costs have been reduced to only around MKD 100,000 at a monthly level. In addition to obtaining higher quality lighting, it is also expected that the downtimes of the public lighting network will be minimized, in view of the fact that the operational lifespan of the new lighting is 100,000 working hours or around 20 years. The improved lighting enables an increase in the road functionality, especially at night, which will also contribute for an enhanced security of the citizens.” – says the mayor of Kriva Palanka, Borjanco Micevski.

The smart lighting was implemented by Makedonski Telekom, whose system and technology are one of a kind not only in our country but also in the region, whereby this municipality in the eastern part of the country is turning a new page in the modern history of smart cities.

“The benefits from this solution are enormous and the potential is even greater due to the fact that the Smart City platform can be indefinitely supplemented with new applications and new elements which are of interest for the citizens and the local community. The smart city solutions are a role model for using technology for the benefit of the citizens. This should motivate also the other municipalities to join in the digital transformation, which will contribute for a better life, economy and, above all, a healthy environment" - said Goce Mitevski, Chief Commercial Officer B2C in Makedonski Telekom.

In addition to Kriva Palanka, also the municipalities of Makedonska Kamenica, Cesinovo-Oblesevo and Vasilevo, in cooperation with Makedonski Telekom, have already implemented smart street lighting, and the project Skopje – Smart City is coming to an end, whereby the capital city will be completely transformed.
