Smart cities are slowly but surely becoming a part of our everyday life: resource optimization, greater safety, better urban infrastructure... these are some of the inevitable solutions for a better quality of life and for preserving the environment.

Our capital is continuously growing and facing the same challenges that all the big cities in the world are faced with, such as the need for efficient waste management, better infrastructure, reducing the pollution.

Whether and when could Skopje become a smart city? Even though we do not expect it to happen overnight, we still have to start somewhere.

In our country, companies like Makedonski Telekom, already have specific solutions, such as: smart lighting, smart parking... These digital solutions are the next step towards a full transformation of Skopje into a smart city..

For instance, the smart street lighting solution is already applied in Copenhagen and Chicago, where the regular street lights have been replaced with LED lights, and also a Cloud street lighting control and management system was introduced. The sensors have enabled for the lights to automatically activate once they register any movement, which has contributed for a lower number of traffic accidents and criminal activities, as well as for energy savings owing to the lights turning off when there is no movement. The smart lighting in these cities provided them with the benefit of a lower consumption, a more eco friendly environment, as well as an increase of the citizens’ safety and security level.

Another example is the waste management digitization, a solution that has been helping numerous cities worldwide to better organize their waste collection and disposal, via digital solutions such as smart bins, which indicate to the user how full the waste container is, the temperature in it, its total weight, etc. Such solutions are being created for a healthier environment, they are making the city management activities much easier and more cost-efficient and they enhance the urban living.

If such digital solutions are gradually introduced, in a short time the major part of the challenges faced by our capital city will become history.
