The FEEIT students will be among the first to test the new technology that will be in introduced in Europe after 2020

Today, in Skopje, on the occasion of 17 May - World Telecommunication Day, Makedonski Telekom and FEEIT announced their partnership for testing the 5G technology.

Makedonski Telekom will install 5G equipment and testing devices that will enable the students and professors to be the first to work on the functionalities of this new technological standard. The obtained results will be used for scientific purposes and improvement of services that will be available for the customers in future.

The tests will be made on the new equipment of Makedonski Telekom and in the new “5G Evolution Laboratory” within the Wireless and Mobile Networks Laboratory within the Telecommunications Institute of FEEIT.

"Our professors and students have received multiple prestigious recognitions for projects that they developed in the existing laboratory. As of now, with the new 5G equipment and devices in the newly established laboratory, we will have the first and unique opportunity in the country to perform real scenario tests, experiments and researches related to the future technologies The real testing of this technology will provide our professors, associates and students with big advantage, and I am sure that it will produce new solutions and innovations", said Liljana Gavrilovska, full professor at the FEEIT.

5G or the fifth generation network will not only bring enormous data transfer speeds via internet and real-time communication in the following years, but it will change the manner how our society functions.

“We are working intensely in order to provide a testing environment for the 5G - fifth generation cutting edge mobile technology as one of the last stages before the preparation of a business case for commercial implementation. We are planning investments in the network that will open new possibilities for superior customer experience.

Last year, we performed the first 5G demo in the region, and by the end of this year, we will have a test platform that will give us experiences in a real surrounding.

The partnership with FEEIT and the cooperation with the academic community will enable us to bring the 5G technologies closer to the students, the future telecommunication professionals who will be able to be the first to test the benefits of the new revolutionary technology", said Nikola Ljusev, Chief Executive Officer of Makedonski Telekom.

More about “5G Evolution Laboratory” within FEEIT

“5G Evolution Laboratory” is a newly established laboratory within the Wireless and Mobile Networks Laboratory within the Telecommunications Institute. The laboratory was equipped via a NATO project for emulation of 5G core network and virtual radio access, using software defined radio. Through the cooperation with Makedonski Telekom, “5G Evolution Laboratory” will be additionally upgraded with real 5G devices for performance testing and it will become a state of the art laboratory in the country where 5G technologies and systems will be tested.

Until now, the wireless and mobile networks laboratory was used for projects in the area of wireless and mobile communications with application in the 3G and 4G networks. It is a research laboratory where researches and tests are performed related to the current projects and innovative technological solutions (virtualisation, radio coverage maps, dynamic spectrum access, intelligent infrastructures, self/organizing networks etc.). The laboratory is also accredited for measurement of features and conformity of the radio equipment and measurement of the radio spectrum. Numerous projects in the area of wireless and mobile communications, as well as student researches as part of the graduation, masters and PhD theses, were realized in this laboratory. The members of the laboratory have received multiple prestigious international recognitions. The equipment, the development of the hardware platform and the new software will provide testing of the cutting edge mobile technologies and systems which will enable the academic staff, together with the students, to work in the first 5G testing laboratory in the country.
