Vevcani Carnival is dedicated to the celebration of the coming of the New Year according to the old calendar.

At the meeting with the journalists, the representative of Makedonski Telekom - the general sponsor of the event, Ms. Irena Miseva, Senior Sponsorships Manager, stated the following: “As a company that always endeavours to recognize true value, Makedonski Telekom always extends its unselfish support to the cultural events in our country. That is why for several years now we have been friends with the Vevcani Carnival in the capacity of a general sponsor.”

During the period of the Vasilica celebration, Vevcani, with its unique masks, is an open theatre for all the guests and it ensures extraordinary pleasure for all who are a part of this incredible experience.

The Carnival dedicated to St. Basil the Great - the patron of the participants in the Vevcani Carnival (Vasilicari) and of the inhabitants of Vevcani, is different from the other carnivals from around the world with its archaic character and the unique masks which are a combination of the pagan and the modern ways of celebrating.

During the Carnival, Vevcani is turned into a kind of a theatre without any limits for smaller or bigger masked carnival groups. In the course of the Carnival days, the inhabitants of Vevcani from around the world come home in order to participate in this unique show where they mock and make fun of phenomena and persons from the social life.

This year the Carnival is going to start unofficially in the afternoon on 12th January, with the exhibition of photographs by Atanas Kjuskoski on the topic of female masks, and it will continue in the evening with a great rock happening performed, among others, by Area, Crvena Jabuka and Skandal Sostav.

The great Carnival day is 13th January with the traditional parade of masks, this year also spiced up with the celebration for welcoming the Old New Year out in the open, at the Vevcani square, with the concert of music starts from our country and the neighbouring ones.

The event ends on 14th January with the traditional Vevcani Vacilica Roundabout and the ritual of burning the masks.

- The Vevacni Carnival has persisted for as long as Vevcani has existed. It is probably rooted in the period of the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus because one of the main masks at the Carnival is the August Fool. The people of Vevcani, as a part of the Macedonian people, have been nourishing the carnival tradition. For as long as you can hear the sounds of the Vasilica drums, the tradition will continue to endure – said Pero Ilieski, Mayor of the Municipality of Vevcani, at the press conference.

Vevcani is increasingly gaining the appearance of a tourist attraction instead of an emigrant village known for its ‘neimars” – the best bricklayers in the country and abroad, while the last year’s Carnival was also visited by guests from Great Britain, Australia and New Zeeland.

In 1993, the Vevcani Carnival, i.e. Vevcani, became a member of FECC – the Federation of European Carnival Cities.
